My interest was in the way the light fell on the hanging towels, as well as the ongoing figure of the woman who has been in my work in hundreds of paintings, who came to be called the laundry lady. She is a figure I have used since around 2003 and her beginnings are not all that clear to me, but she holds a place in a scene when I need her and does it pretty regularly.
Obviously my interest here is the light on the stripes. I do that a lot. I am not sure why but it just feels like capturing light itself on a canvas.
Time is something I think is on everyones mind these days, or maybe just mine. I’ve never been so aware that time goes by as fast as it does since before 2020. I like that in a painting that figure stays there for all time so I try to make her have a very calm and serene setting.
