This painting is one of my very favorites in person and hard to photograph, but there it is. The bookending of darks with her very vibrant center throws my camera into a place it isn’t comfortable. But in person, the darks are variant, the yellow softer, and the whole painting feels less stark with the transition from light to dark. She is applying her lipstick and is dressed immaculately and carries a stunningly beautiful pink bag. For me the beauty of this painting is capturing the light on the shirt, the subtle and unsubtle of her, from her eyelashes, not subtle, to her hair, conservative and stark against the vibrant yellow. I think it embodies women to be honest, still grappling with a mix of what we want to want and what we still feel like makes us who we are.
