This summer I did a demo for my students at Nimrod that was the inspiration for this painting. It is not in the show as it sold, but it is a variant on the same theme. My demo was to show how I paint from no reference but my own memories of painting, seeing, and doing that I have now been actively doing nonstop for 30 plus years. Painting for me is not about replicating what I see in front of me, but has become about painting what I see in my mind using my tools I have from so many years of working.
She is on her way is the laundry lady who is, I guess, literally on her way. I paint and paint and only when I write these descriptions so I even realize what the path as of my work. I did this very early in the summer, and she has shed her working uniform and I guess I thought she was traveling. She went, incidentally, to the beach, but then she just never went back. She morphed this summer into someone in pink, shopping, walking her dog, and truly, she just was on her way. None of this might make sense to someone who has not followed my work, but for those who do, it might.
The cat and the dog are often in my work. The black cat was from when I was very first painting what I wanted to paint versus just getting a lucky accident every now and again. She was a cat names Linus, and was solid black, and her form was a great composition balance and she started appearing in my early interiors as a source of something living and because I loved her. My other cat was gray striped and not so easy to paint. The black dog is my current dog who again, adds balance but also is there because he is there. He is always there. So that explains the animals, I hope.
