I think the happiest thing in my life might be walking the beach on a sunny day and finding a piece of sea glass or - and this is real excitement - an intact sea urchin shell or a sand dollar unbroken. One of the more returns to subject matters in my career is the woman on the beach. She is a symbol of idealization of what I would like to be doing at that moment when I am painting her. It is not supposed to BE me (I get asked often if the laundress or the solo woman in white is a a self portrait) and I have decided it isn’t but I am aware she does a lot of the things I would like to be doing so certainly is some kind of extension. She has been around so long and just comes and goes.
