There is a series of these paintings of flowers, up close, with nothing but the sun and a slight feeling of a breeze. I painted these, from memory, and they are very abstract, during the height of the winter. I would paint in my brightly lit studio these lush and amazing flowers lit with a summer sun and something would cause me to to glance out the window and I would be momentarily shocked to see a gloomy winter landscape. Painting is the best of escapes because whatever you paint, you live. You are there. I have been accused of being a happy painter, something that a certain kind of artist finds disdainful, and I always think to myself, but why would you not? In my world, I like to be happy and choose happy things and what is more amazing than bright flowers swaying in the breeze? So I paint them.
