From a group of works this winter when it snowed and snowed on us. In this painting I intentionally set out to capture the brightness of the snow in the nighttime but not lose the contrast and feeling of the cold. Snow is a great subject because it is a value study every time of the subtle and then intense blues and violets you can break out. The paintings where it is snowing are more complicated than it might seem. If you look closely, you can see that on top of the blues the snow may be a lighter blue, not white like you would expect. Approaching snow this way keeps it where it is supposed to be in the painting instead of hovering like a veil on top of the images. I grew up in Louisiana and to this day get a thrill when it starts to snow. To this day, when it snows I still feel like let's get this party started!
